Documenting Pina Bausch

Documenting a new creation at

Pina Bausch Tanztheater

I was asked by the Pina Bausch Tanztheater to document the creation of their new piece Bon Voyage Bob by Alan Lucien Øyen. I followed a few rehearsals at the legendary Lichtberg Studio in Wuppertal. They were still early on in the process and the perfomers were still very much in the exploration process which was fantastic to witness. The studio was filled with props and costumes. The performers kept the creativity flowing and proposing new scenes to the choreographer. The atmosphere was very pleasant and I had freedom to move around as I pleased. This was of course because everyone was familiar with me. I had just finished working with them as a guest for the show Masurca Fogo by Pina Bausch.

Creator Alan Lucien Øyen is a Norwegian choreographer and playwright who uses text, dance and music to cinematic effect in a piece that’s meticulously crafted and confidently realised. I have had the chance to work with Alan as a dancer in two of his creations for the Gothenburg Opera Dance Company and so I was very happy to able to document his new creation for Pina’s company as it was such an historic moment. This was the first full length creation to happen since the passing of Pina in 2009.

I had the chance to see the piece Bon Voyage, Bob a year later when it was being performed at the Opera in Oslo, Norway
